What the deadline is for
A sudden crisis with a time limit. Detention at customs, a medical bill due tonight, a visa lapsing, an account frozen, an opportunity closing.
The deadline is not incidental to the story. It is the mechanism.
Why time pressure works
Deliberate reasoning takes time and calm. Remove either and people fall back on faster, more emotional processing - which is the intended effect, not a side effect.
More specifically: the deadline exists to prevent the pause. In the gap between hearing about a crisis and acting on it, most people would mention it to somebody. That mention is what kills the scam. A deadline of hours removes the gap.
The reliable structural tell
Genuine emergencies are rarely solvable by one specific person sending one specific amount by one specific time.
Real crises have institutions attached - embassies, hospitals with billing departments, lawyers, insurers, employers. They have several possible routes and usually more than one person who could help. When a problem has exactly one solution and that solution is you, the problem was designed.
What to do
Impose a delay. Not a decision - just a delay. Twenty-four hours.
A real emergency survives twenty-four hours, or has other routes. A manufactured one produces escalating pressure, and that escalation is your answer.
Use the time for one thing: tell somebody. You do not need to decide anything in that period. You just need to not be alone with it.
