The Independent Channel Rule
Why verification only counts through a route you found yourself.
12 minutes to read
One rule, and it is the one that still works
A check only counts if you chose the route.
A number they gave you, a link they sent, a website they named, a colleague they put on the call — none of these verify anything, because all of them are inside the thing being verified. If the contact is fraudulent, so is everything it hands you.
Why this became the whole answer
The advice used to be a list of things to look for. That list has been quietly emptied out: writing quality, willingness to appear on video, a plausible photograph. Each was a reasonable signal and each can now be produced to order.
The FBI's own guidance has moved with it, and what it now tells people to do is not to detect anything. It is to hang up and call back on a number you found yourself, and, for family, to agree a word in advance that nobody could know.
That is not a smaller answer than the old list. It is a better one, because it does not depend on your perception at all, and perception is exactly what is under attack.
What it looks like in practice
Your bank rings about fraud. You end the call, wait a minute, and dial the number on your card. If the first call was real, nothing is lost but two minutes.
A recruiter offers a role. You find the company yourself and ring the switchboard, rather than using the contact details in the message.
Someone you love asks for money urgently. You call them back on the number you already had, and if you cannot reach them, you call another family member before you do anything else.
The objection, answered
It feels rude, and that feeling is the point of the pressure. Nobody legitimate is harmed by two minutes. Every approach that fails this test fails it for the same reason: it cannot survive you leaving the conversation.
What to carry out of this
- A check only counts if you chose the route to make it
- Detection advice has been emptied out; independent verification has not
- Nothing legitimate is damaged by ending the call and ringing back
