The Request for Secrecy

One of the few near-binary signals in this entire field.

12 minutes to read

An unusually clean signal

Most warning signs are probabilistic. This one is close to binary.

If someone asks you not to discuss your relationship with your family, your friends, or your bank, the conversation is over. Not paused. Over.

Why it is so reliable

Every legitimate reason for privacy survives one trusted person knowing. A private relationship is not a hidden one. Someone protecting an ex-partner's feelings, or an employer's rules, or their own dignity, has no need for you to have zero confidants.

The request only makes sense if outside perspective is a threat. And outside perspective is only a threat if the relationship does not survive contact with it.

The bank version

Pay particular attention when the coaching is about financial institutions.

"Just say it's for home improvements." "They'll ask questions, banks always do, it's easier to keep it simple." "Don't mention my name, it complicates the transfer."

This is coaching you to defeat a fraud control that exists specifically to protect you. There is no innocent version of it. Bank staff in most countries are trained to ask, and being told in advance how to answer is not a coincidence.

What to do

Treat it as a hard stop, not a data point.

And if you are reading this having already been asked - that is not evidence that you are foolish. It is evidence that you were selected by someone competent, who knew exactly which control to disable and when.

What to carry out of this

  • Legitimate privacy survives one trusted person knowing
  • Coaching on what to tell a bank has no innocent explanation
  • Treat this as a hard stop rather than one signal among many
