Unpredictable reward produces stronger, more persistent attachment than consistent reward. This is one of the most reliable findings in behavioural psychology, and it is the reason gambling machines pay out on a variable schedule rather than a fixed one.

Applied to a relationship, it produces something that feels like intensity and is actually conditioning.

What it looks like

Days of extraordinary warmth. Then a cooling nobody explains. Then wounded silence over something small. Then an apology, and warmth returns - brighter than before, because it was withheld.

Repeat, with the gaps getting shorter.

Note that competent operators are rarely angry. Anger invites pushback. Hurt does not - it invites reassurance, and reassurance is the target doing the work.

How to recognise it from the inside

The reliable sign is not something they do. It is something you start doing.

You begin drafting messages carefully. You notice relief when they respond warmly. You find yourself explaining a delay before anyone has complained. You are managing their moods, and you did not decide to start.

That shift - from participating in a relationship to maintaining someone's emotional state - is the thing to notice. It is much easier to spot in your own behaviour than in theirs.

What to do

Name it plainly to yourself: this person's warmth is unpredictable, and I have started working for it.

Then tell someone outside it. This pattern is very hard to see from inside and very obvious from outside, which is exactly why isolation almost always accompanies it.
