Isolation
The strongest predictor of a completed scam, and it never announces itself as control.

The decisive move
If you learn one thing about romance fraud, learn this: isolation predicts completion better than any other factor.
Not the sophistication of the story. Not the amount asked for. Not the target's age or intelligence. Whether or not somebody else knew.
How it is done
Never as control. Always as intimacy.
"What we have is ours." "I don't want other people's opinions in this." "Your sister has never liked anyone you've dated, has she?" "People wouldn't understand what this is."
Each step is small, and each one is arguable. Nobody announces that they are cutting you off. They express a preference for privacy, then mild hurt when outside opinion appears, then sadness that others do not understand. The target does the isolating themselves, and it feels like loyalty.
Why it is necessary
Outside perspective is the main defence, and it works because it is not emotionally invested. Your friend has not spent three weeks falling for this person. They hear the story cold, and cold is exactly what is needed.
Operators know this precisely. It is why the request for privacy arrives early - usually before any money is mentioned - and why bank staff get named so often. The bank teller who asks what a transfer is for is the last outside perspective in the chain.
What to do
Decide in advance that one person always knows. Choose them now, before there is anything to tell. Not for permission - just so that a second view exists by default.
And treat any request for secrecy as the signal it is. Not a red flag among many. The flag. Legitimate partners do not ask to be hidden from your family, and they never coach you on what to tell your bank.
What to carry out of this
- Whether someone else knew predicts the outcome better than any other factor
- Isolation is always framed as intimacy and never as control
- Decide now who always knows, before there is anything to tell
