Spotting Geographic Inconsistency
Time zones, weather, local detail and the questions that surface gaps.

The claim that carries the whole story
Almost every long approach depends on being somewhere else. An oil platform, a contract abroad, a deployment, a site with no signal. That distance explains why you cannot meet, why the call keeps failing, and eventually why the money has to move.
Which makes location the load-bearing claim, and the one worth putting weight on.
Ask about the ordinary, never the impressive
Someone with a story has prepared the story. What has not been prepared is whatever is genuinely dull about being where they claim to be.
What time do they eat? What is the weather doing right now, this afternoon, not in general? What is the local currency worth against yours this week? Which supermarket is nearest? What is annoying about the drive to work?
The difference matters. "What's it like in Dubai" invites the prepared answer. "Is it still that horrible haze in the mornings" is checkable, boring, and specific, and someone who is not there has to either guess or deflect.
Time is harder to fake than facts
Facts can be looked up in the moment. Behaviour cannot be looked up.
If somebody is in a time zone eight hours ahead, their messages should be inconvenient at predictable hours and absent at others. Sustained availability that happens to match *your* waking day, from a person who claims to be on the other side of the world, is the single most reliable geographic signal there is — and it is free, because you already have the timestamps.
What deflection sounds like
Nobody says "I do not know". A prepared account produces warmth instead: gentle teasing about the interrogation, a joke, hurt that you would ask, or a redirect onto how much they miss you.
Watch what happens to a plain question, not what happens to the answer. A real person on a real oil platform will tell you what the food is like at length, and will be pleased to be asked.
What to carry out of this
- Location is the load-bearing claim in almost every long approach
- Ask what is dull and checkable, never what is impressive
- Availability that fits your waking hours is the strongest signal, and it is free
