Job Offers, Task Work and Money Muling

The work that pays you before it asks, and why forwarding a payment makes you the suspect.

The offer that arrives by text

Real employers do not recruit strangers by text message. That single fact disposes of most of these before any detail matters.

The vagueness is not carelessness either. "App optimisation", "product boosting", "merchant ratings" - a job that cannot be described in plain terms cannot be checked, and that is the point of describing it that way. Reports of this pattern to the FTC went from none at all in 2020 to about 20,000 in the first half of 2024 alone.

Why it pays you first

The first days' work pays. Small amounts, on time, exactly as promised.

That is the mechanism, not a mistake, and its cost is budgeted for. A payment that arrives converts a cautious person into a confident one more effectively than any argument could, and it does it before anything has been asked of them.

Then the higher-value task set requires funding first - your own money, framed as a deposit returned with the commission, or as commission already earned and merely held by the system. It is presented as routine administration, because routine administration is not frightening.

You never pay in order to be paid. No legitimate employer has ever required it. That one line, held without argument, ends the entire category.

The other exit: your account becomes the product

Some of this work is not about your labour at all. The job is to receive payments, keep a percentage and forward the rest, and the thing being hired is your bank account.

Money moved this way is the proceeds of other people's fraud, and the account holder is the identifiable party. Banks close accounts for it and record the reason through industry channels, which makes opening another one difficult for years. Investigations start with the name on the account, because that is the name there is.

Not knowing is a defence that eventually works and never works quickly.

What to do

Never accept a payment into your account on someone else's behalf, whatever the story attached to it.

If it has already happened, stop immediately, keep every message, and contact your bank yourself on the number printed on your card. Telling them before they find it is materially better than the reverse.

What to carry out of this

  • A job that cannot be described in plain terms cannot be checked
  • Early payments are budgeted for: they are the mechanism, not evidence of an employer
  • Never pay in order to be paid, and never receive money for someone else
