Nothing you give away looks like much

That is the whole mechanism, and it is why a warning about "personal information" slides off. Nobody hands over a dossier. They answer a friendly question about where they grew up, and later one about whether the mortgage is finished, and later one about which bank is less awful than the others.

Each answer is ordinary. The file is not.

What ordinary details actually buy

Your capacity. Whether the house is owned, whether there is a pension, whether a parent left something. This decides whether you are worth weeks of somebody's time, and it is established early and gently.

Your isolation. Who would notice. Whether a daughter is nearby or in another city, whether you still work, who you would tell. This decides the method.

Your levers. A bereavement, an illness, a divorce, a redundancy, a child in trouble. These are what the script is tuned to once it is known which one you have.

Your credentials. Not the password, which you would never give. The mother's maiden name, the first school, the street you grew up on — the answers to the questions a bank asks to be sure it is you.

The asymmetry

You are having a conversation. They are completing a form. That is not a metaphor: organised operations keep structured notes on targets, and the warmth is the interview technique rather than the point of the exchange.

Which is why "be careful what you share" is useless advice. Nobody feels themselves sharing.

What to do instead

Notice the direction. In a real friendship the questions go both ways and the answers get mixed up with digressions. In an interview one side asks and the other side answers, and the asking is disguised by being interested.

If you cannot remember what you know about them that could be checked — an employer, a street, a school, a surname — while they could recite your file, that is not a personality difference. It is the shape of the thing.
