Shared Identity as a Shortcut

Trust is expensive, and belonging is a coupon

Getting a stranger to trust you takes weeks. Getting them to trust a member of their own group takes one sentence, because the work has already been done by the group.

That is the whole mechanism, and it has a name in fraud investigation: affinity fraud, where the vector is a shared identity rather than a shared interest.

What gets used

Faith is the most documented. Nationality and language, especially among people living abroad. A profession, particularly one with its own vocabulary — nurses, soldiers, seafarers, engineers. Military service. A recent bereavement of the same kind. A diagnosis, which is the cruellest version, because a support group is a room full of people who have already agreed to be honest about something difficult.

Why it defeats scepticism specifically

Normal caution says: what does this person want from me? Group membership answers the question before it is asked. Somebody inside is not a stranger with a motive, they are one of us, and the whole point of a group is that its members get a different level of trust than everybody else.

Worse, checking feels like an accusation. Asking a fellow congregant for evidence is not neutral; it is a small betrayal of the shared thing, and most people will not pay that social cost.

The correction

Membership of a group is a claim, and it is exactly as verifiable as any other claim. It is also the easiest thing in the world to research: the vocabulary, the customs, the names, the shared references are all public and can be learned in an afternoon.

So the rule is simple and it is not cynical. Belonging changes how much you enjoy talking to someone. It does not change what you verify. A real member of your group has nothing to lose by your checking, and will not be offended for long.
