Habits, not vigilance

Vigilance is exhausting and it fails on exactly the night you need it. Habits cost nothing on an ordinary day and are still there at eleven at night after a bad one.

Four worth having

Stay on the platform until you have met. Not because dating apps are safe — they are indifferent — but because moving off is the first thing that has to happen, and it is the only step where refusing costs you nothing. Reporting, and any trace of the account, live on the platform and nowhere else.

Tell one person, in the first week. Named, casual, no permission sought. This is the defence that most reliably breaks a long approach, which is why removing it is the work an operator does first.

Meet early, locally, and tell someone where. A short coffee in the third week settles more than three months of messaging, and someone who cannot manage that after twelve weeks has told you something.

No money before a meeting. Tie the rule to an event and not to a feeling, because the feeling arrives on schedule.

What not to bother with

Reverse image searching everybody, memorising red-flag lists, or interrogating people who have done nothing. Most people you meet are exactly who they say they are, and treating them as suspects costs you the thing you came for while protecting you from very little.

The habits above work because they do not require you to detect anything.

When one of them is inconvenient

That is the test, and it will not feel like one. Somebody suggesting the other app, or a reason this week is impossible, or gentle disappointment that you mentioned them to a friend — none of it will arrive as pressure. It will arrive as preference, and it will be easy to accommodate.

Notice how a small no is received. That single reaction tells you more than the previous six weeks.
