Nearly universal
Within the first few days, almost every romance approach includes a request to move to WhatsApp, Telegram, or text. The stated reason is always mundane: the app is buggy, notifications do not work, this is easier.
What actually changes
Dating platforms run fraud detection across accounts and messages. They retain reports. When one person reports a profile, others who spoke to it can be warned. Photographs get checked against known scam image sets.
Private messaging has none of that. There is no detection, no shared reporting, no history for anyone else to consult.
The move also solves a problem for them: a thin, new profile with no real history stops being visible once the conversation lives somewhere else.
Why this matters more than it sounds
This is the cheapest interruption point in the whole sequence. It happens early, before real emotional investment, and refusing costs nothing. Everything after it is harder to interrupt because by then something is at stake.
What to do
Stay on the platform until you have met in person. Not for a week - until you have met.
Someone genuinely interested will find that mildly inconvenient and continue. Someone running a process will push, and how they respond to a simple no is itself the most useful piece of information you will get in the first fortnight.
